after robert kennedy was killed and said, we have ten days before the nra gets mobilized. we have ten days to accomplish the bill was sitting in the judiciary committee, the gun bans, from the time when john f. kennedy was killed. and now martin luther king jr. had been killed, robert kennedy was killed. he said, you've got ten days to mobilize. you've got to get this done. they did what they could and they came up with a much smaller bill which was signed regretfully by lbj in october. >> i don't have the historical perspective that andrea does, but i have covered all the -- >> you didn't cover that '68 bill? >> no, i missed it. but i have covered the four instances of mass gun violence under obama, and i have to say the scariest thing to me with respect to newtown was when i g-chatted my fellow editor in new york to plot out coverage, and we knew exactly what to do because we had done it three times before. it had gotten so routine and so disturbing to us and i'm worried i'll be writing the same story. >> we can't desensitize ourselves to this, though. >> listen, we're not going to.

the renewed support for the politicians that are willing to challenge the powerful nra lobby. new york senator criticized the nra vice president argument that any attempt that the gun restrictions is showing you is bound to fail. >> i think he's so extreme and tone death that he actually helps the cause of us passing the sensible gun registration in the congress. >> a number of the democratic congressmen have pledged to consider the assault weapons banned. on sales of the semiautomatic rifles. many firearm enthusiasts fear that the new laws are here and voting with their pocketbooks. at a denver gun show this weekend, ammunition for the semiautomatic rifle, the style of weapon used in the newtown attack. sold out within an hour. >> we're worried that we won't be able to keep our guns for our safety. we're not doing anything wrong. >> and it isn't clear yet whether the nation's second worse school shooting actually drives washington to change any gun laws. but a review by cbs5 news indicates schools in at least a dozen states are looking at the nra call to add the armed officers or allow teache

correct and partially wrong. it looks like the nra's proposal is a lot like exactly what happened after 9/11. immediately though grabbed any federal agent they could to throw them on the planes and later on they put together a really poorly implemented program to arm pilots. and not very many volunteered for the program. i can see the reality. look. he is right in some regard. if someone shows up at a school and there is an armed principal and armed guard clearly that is not going to happen it's unseasonable for starters. it is impractical. let alone the safety implications that come out of all of this. did it work in the skies though? >> well, could argue that it is working because there hasn't been an incident but it looks like every time an american aircraft that gets hijacked there hasn't been any air marshals or both planes that have in iad's on board most of them didn't have armed marshals on them and i don't think there were any armed pilots on them either. so, the air marshall program alone is a billion-dollar program. and the armed pilots program is a lot of the pilots believe it

to slam their proposal. >> the nra, i would say that they were tone deaf, but it's beyond that. they're just deaf. i mean, they have completely ignored, don't understand, don't grasp how deeply wounded this nation was. >> national correspondent susan candiotti joins from us new york. susan, the nra is adamant in its position and here we are talking about it today. so was this their game plan to change the focus of discussioning from gun control to school safety? >> well, good question. but of course, is one exclusive of the other? if you ban these types of weapons, if you restrict the size of magazine clips, for example, does that mean that you couldn't also require an armed officer in every school in the thing is, the nra did not take any questions at all when they made their statement. they left so we're left to wonder. but we did try to sample opinions of what people are thinking. and we talked to, for example, a gun owner in newtown, connecticut, to see what she thought about this. >> i'm very torn at this point. i'm not happy with the nra. i am not happy with the nra and i'm a g

of action both democrats and republicans. host: why is that? guest: n.r.a. says we have the right to bear arms and we shouldn't limit that right in any way. if anything, as you know, there have been comments in the last few days that encourage more americans, to carry guns. we need to refute that and stand up. and one thing is this terrible tragedy has done for those of us who have always thought we should do more to make sure we are safe and children are safe and for those who have not stood up, you know what, we need to stand up and ensure our children are safer and we need to do something to make sure that dangerous guns don't get in the hands of criminals or those who are mentally ill. host: is that your message to red state democrats? guest: it's to everyone. let's do something. we have seen it so many times. there would be one crime where we would give it a longer sentence and stand up immediately to make sure we would keep people safe because something horrendous happened. why are we not doing that when we see one horrendous tragedy, multiple students. we have seen it in movie thea
